A Neighboring Dwarf Irregular Galaxy Hidden by the Milky Way

We have obtained VLA and optical follow-up observations of the low-velocity H I source HIZSS 3 discovered by Henning et al. 2000 and Rivers 2000 in a survey for nearby galaxies hidden by the disk of the Milky Way. Its radio characteristics are consistent with this being a nearby (∼ 1.8 Mpc) low-mass dwarf irregular galaxy (dIm). Our optical imaging failed to reveal a resolved stellar population...

Evidence for coupling between the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy and the Milky Way warp

Using recent determinations of the mass and orbit of Sagittarius, I calculate its orbital angular momentum. From the latest observational data, I also calculate the angular momentum of the Milky Way’s warp. I find that both angular momenta are directed toward l ≈ 270, b = 0, and have magnitude 2–8× 10 M⊙ kpc km s , where the range in both cases reflects uncertainty in the mass. The coincidence ...

Galaxy Formation: Clues from the Milky Way

Stellar Populations are the fossil record of Galactic evolution. Interpretation of this record in the Local Group allows one to determine reliably the dominant physics controlling the evolution of those galaxies which are typical of the luminosity in the Universe, and is an essential prerequisite to understanding necessarily limited data at high redshifts. In our Galaxy, the key issues are the ...

Chemodynamical Simulations of the Milky Way Galaxy

We present chemodynamical simulations of a Milky Way-type galaxy using a selfconsistent hydrodynamical code that includes supernova feedback and chemical enrichment, and predict the spatial distribution of elements from Oxygen to Zinc. In the simulated galaxy, the kinematical and chemical properties of the bulge, disk, and halo are consistent with the observations. The bulge formed from the ass...

Black holes in the milky way galaxy.

Extremely strong observational evidence has recently been found for the presence of black holes orbiting a few relatively normal stars in our Milky Way Galaxy and also at the centers of some galaxies. The former generally have masses of 4-16 times the mass of the sun, whereas the latter are "supermassive black holes" with millions to billions of solar masses. The evidence for a supermassive bla...
